French authorities have rejected the asylum application of Ephrem Yalike-Ngonzo, a Central African journalist whose testimony helped expose the inner workings of Russia's disinformation network in the Central African Republic (CAR) a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from press freedom advocates and raised uncomfortable questions about France's credibility in its information war against Moscow.
Who Is Ephrem Yalike-Ngonzo
Between 2019 and 2022, Yalike-Ngonzo worked under a handler known by the pseudonym "Micha" later identified by investigators as Mikhaïl Prudnikov helping produce content favorable to Central African authorities and their Russian allies as part of an influence operation known as "Politology," reportedly linked to Russia's SVR foreign intelligence service. He says he broke from the network after refusing to help cover up an incident in which Russian mercenaries wounded two young Fulani herders.
Fearing for his safety, he attempted to flee the country, only to be arrested by Central African authorities in February 2024, questioned on suspicion of treason, and stripped of his travel documents. His family managed to reach France, but he remained trapped until President Emmanuel Macron personally intervened to secure him a safe-conduct pass to leave via the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Once in France, Yalike-Ngonzo contributed to "Propaganda Machine," an international investigation led by Forbidden Stories, which exposed the mechanics of Russia's disinformation operations in the CAR. His revelations directly led to European Union sanctions against Prudnikov, one of the key figures in Moscow's influence architecture in the country.
Why His Asylum Was Denied
According to his legal team at the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF), French administrators rejected his claim on the grounds that he had participated in organizing anti-Western protests in Bangui, including demonstrations against France itself activity he has never denied, and which was in fact precisely what made his insider testimony valuable to investigators. His lawyer, Henri Thulliez, called the decision "an extremely negative signal" to anyone abroad, particularly in Africa, seeking to fight Russian propaganda.
PPLAAF's executive director, Jimmy Kande, described the ruling as leaving Yalike-Ngonzo "without any protection" against serious reprisals to himself and his family. An appeal was filed July 9, 2026, before France's National Asylum Court (CNDA), though a ruling could take up to a year. In the meantime, Yalike-Ngonzo remains in hiding in France with his family, while relatives still in the CAR are reportedly being regularly questioned and pressured to reveal his location.
The Stakes of a Possible Return
A return to the Central African Republic would place Yalike-Ngonzo in grave danger, particularly given Wagner's documented brutality in the country including recent violence in Zemio, where the group reportedly beheaded captives.
Analysts monitoring Wagner's activities argue the case exposes a deeper inconsistency: after more than five years of official French efforts to counter Russian hybrid warfare, the state's inability to protect a proven defector who took direct personal risk raises real questions about Paris's genuine commitment to the information battle against Moscow.
The Fedorova Comparison
The case has drawn pointed comparisons on social media to that of Xenia Fedorova, former director of Russia Today France, who reportedly had her 10-year French residence card validated around the same period a contrast critics say illustrates an uneven application of France's stated anti-disinformation posture.
Wider Context
The episode unfolds against a backdrop of intensifying rivalry between Paris and Moscow for influence in the CAR. Wagner's operations there have since been folded into Africa Corps, an entity under Russia's Ministry of Defence, following a process that CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra had initially resisted before ultimately reaching an agreement with Moscow. In early March 2026, Touadéra met Russian President Vladimir Putin, and France's foreign minister travelled to Bangui shortly after underscoring the intensity of the diplomatic tug-of-war over the country.
