A Senior Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, says the President remains committed to finding lasting solutions to Ghana's recurring flood crisis following the recent devastating floods in parts of Accra.
Her comments come ahead of a two-day National General Cleaning Exercise scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, across seven regions affected by the recent floods.
In a social media post on Thursday, July 9, Joyce Bawah said the exercise forms part of broader efforts by the Mahama administration to address the country's flooding challenge through collaboration with key stakeholders and greater public participation.
"The administration, under the leadership of the President, is committed to finding lasting solutions to flooding and has been engaging with the Security services, Anti Flood Committee, and other well-meaning citizens in this endeavor," she wrote.
She noted that the recent torrential rains, which inundated several parts of Accra, exposed persistent challenges with waste management and poor disposal practices, resulting in displacement, loss of lives and damage to infrastructure.
Joyce Bawah stressed that while government is pursuing long-term interventions, citizens also have a responsibility to help prevent flooding by keeping their surroundings clean and ensuring drains and waterways remain free of waste.
"It is imperative for citizens to take responsibility for their environment, ensure decluttering of waterways, and minimize pollution. By working together, we can build a better future for ourselves and the next generation," noted the Presidential Advisor.
She urged Ghanaians to use the national clean-up exercise as an opportunity to adopt sustainable waste disposal practices and help reduce the risk of future flooding across the country.
