Thousands of patients across Ghana are set to benefit from improved healthcare services following a major intervention by MTN Ghana, which has seen the refurbishment of 3,888 hospital beds and essential medical equipment under its flagship 21 Days of Y’ello Care initiative.
The initiative, which forms part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations, was undertaken in partnership with DOSH Foundation, Sika Pɛ Adwuma Co. Ltd., and seven healthcare facilities nationwide to improve patient comfort, support healthcare workers, and contribute to efforts aimed at addressing Ghana’s persistent no-bed syndrome.
As part of the project, MTN employees volunteered their time and expertise to refurbish faulty hospital-owned equipment, including hospital beds, ward screens, drip stands, metallic cabinets, and three-in-one patient chairs.
The restored equipment has been handed over to seven beneficiary hospitals; Achimota Hospital, Maamobi General Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, and Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital to enhance healthcare delivery and extend the lifespan of critical medical assets.
Speaking at the national handover ceremony held at Achimota Hospital on June 26, 2026, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, said the intervention reflected the company’s determination to ensure that its 30 years of operations in Ghana translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens.
She said MTN Ghana’s focus was not only on business growth but also on creating lasting value for communities.
“As we planned this year’s Y’ello Care programme, we asked ourselves a simple question: what does 30 years in Ghana truly mean if it does not show up in the lives of the people we serve? That question shaped everything we decided to do,” Madam Wiafe stated.
She explained that MTN initially targeted the refurbishment of 3,000 hospital beds and accessories but exceeded the target through the commitment of staff volunteers and the technical expertise of Sika Pɛ Adwuma Co. Ltd.
“We wanted to respond directly to a real need within Ghana’s healthcare system. This initiative was our response to the no-bed syndrome that has frustrated patients, families and healthcare workers for far too long. Today, together with our partner, Sika Pɛ Adwuma Co. Ltd., we have refurbished 3,888 hospital beds and accessories,” she added.
Beyond hospital equipment restoration, MTN Ghana also extended the 2026 Y’ello Care programme to include sanitation, hygiene education, community health screening, and support for patients facing financial challenges.
Under the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programme, MTN employee volunteers installed 30 handwashing facilities in 16 schools across all 16 regions of Ghana, while providing hygiene education to more than 15,000 pupils.
The beneficiary schools included Osu Presbyterian School and Dansoman Cluster of Schools in the Greater Accra Region, as well as Zogbeli Cluster Block A JHS, Damongo Girls Model School, Walewale Catholic School, Sefwi Dwenase Basic School, Bantama Akyinin M/A Basic School, Tanoso Roman Catholic Basic School, and several others across the country.
MTN volunteers also collaborated with healthcare professionals to conduct community health screening exercises in various communities and institutions, including markets, fishing harbours, correctional facilities, hospitals, and schools.
Beneficiary locations included the Senior Correctional Centre at Roman Ridge in Accra, Essikado Market, Elmina Fishing Harbour, Bantama Fishing Harbour, Akyem Dwenase Community Centre, Kwatire Polyclinic, Kintampo Municipal Hospital, Juaben Municipal Hospital, Sawla District Hospital, Anigazanga Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital in Jirapa, and Damongo Girls Model School.
Madam Wiafe further disclosed that through a partnership with DOSH Foundation, 70 patients who were unable to settle their medical bills received financial support to clear their debts and return home, with each beneficiary also enrolled onto a health insurance package valued at GH¢9,000.
Receiving the refurbished equipment on behalf of the beneficiary institutions, the Medical Superintendent of Achimota Hospital, Dr. Jackline Anita Sowah, described the intervention as timely and impactful.
She said the support would significantly improve patient comfort, strengthen service delivery, reduce pressure on healthcare resources, and contribute to addressing the no-bed syndrome.
“The refurbished medical equipment comes at a critical time when demand for quality healthcare services continues to rise. These interventions will significantly improve patient comfort, strengthen service delivery, reduce pressure on our resources, and contribute to addressing the challenge of the no-bed syndrome,” Dr. Sowah said.
She expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana, Sika Pɛ Adwuma Co. Ltd., and DOSH Foundation for their support and for extending similar interventions to health facilities across the country.
The nationwide initiative formed part of MTN Ghana’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care, the company’s flagship employee volunteerism programme, organised this year under the theme “Expand Equitable Health for Every Community.”
Through the initiative, MTN employees dedicated their time, skills, and resources towards improving healthcare access, promoting hygiene, and building healthier communities across Ghana.
The intervention reinforces MTN Ghana’s commitment to using its 30-year presence in the country as a platform for empowerment, social development, and positive transformation.
