Gov't retooling Immigration Service with 20 armoured vehicles, 8 new regional offices — Muntaka

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has announced plans by the government to procure 20 armoured vehicles for the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) as part of efforts to strengthen border security and enhance the Service's operational capacity.

The minister also disclosed that the government is simultaneously constructing eight regional offices for the Service to address office accommodation challenges and improve operational efficiency across the country.

The minister, who also serves as the MP for Asawase, announced the measures on Monday, July 6, at the opening of the Ghana Immigration Service's five-day Regional Commanders' Conference, held under the theme, "Strengthening Command Synergy for Sustainable Growth."

According to him, the John Dramani Mahama administration remains committed to retooling the country's security services by improving logistics, infrastructure and staff welfare.

He said the construction of the eight regional offices was progressing steadily, with projects underway in the Volta, Ashanti, Western, Bono, Central and Savannah regions, as well as Tema.

"Our target is that, within the next six to eight months—or, at most, within ten months—we will have all of them completed, operational and ready for your use. This will also help reduce the congestion at the headquarters," the minister said.

"We have procured additional vehicles to support your operations, and we are currently in the process of procuring about twenty armoured vehicles to strengthen your operations, especially in the most difficult operational areas across the country," he added.

The minister also highlighted other investments made since the government assumed office, including the completion of payments for the Ghana Immigration Service Centre of Excellence and the deployment of 45 prefabricated accommodation units for officers serving in the five northern regions.

He urged regional and sector commanders to strengthen collaboration, professionalism, discipline and accountability.

The minister stressed that effective leadership and teamwork remain essential to safeguarding Ghana's borders and advancing the country's national security objectives.
