Julius Debrah announces palm processing factory for Akyem Abuakwa

A major economic breakthrough is on the horizon for the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area following the announcement by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah that the government plans to establish one of the largest palm processing factories in the country within the area.

Representing John Dramani Mahama at the 2026 Ohum Festival in Kyebi, Julius Debrah said the ambitious project forms part of government's vision to unlock the immense economic value of Ghana's booming palm industry.

He noted that the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for thousands of young people while strengthening the country's agro-industrial sector.

In a passionate appeal to traditional authorities, the Chief of Staff called on Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin to work with chiefs across Akyem Abuakwa to identify and release a suitable parcel of land for the construction of the factory.

"The President is committed to transforming the palm industry into a powerful engine of economic growth," Julius Debrah indicated, stressing that value addition remains central to the government's agenda for job creation and sustainable development.

The announcement added significant economic significance to this year's Ohum Festival, which drew chiefs, queen mothers and hundreds of residents to the forecourt of Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi to celebrate the rich customs and traditions of Akyem Abuakwa.

Held under the theme "Rejuvenating our Customs for Sustainability and Nature Connection," the festival also featured the enstoolment of Nana Kwame Atuapong Ododobibiri as the Akyem Abuakwa Amanonehene.

Also addressing the gathering, Ahmed Ibrahim reiterated the Mahama administration's resolve to ensure balanced national development, assuring citizens that government remains committed to delivering development to every district across the country.

Meanwhile, the Okyehene urged government to place greater emphasis on improving the welfare of teachers, describing them as the foundation of national development.

He also appealed for financial interventions to help contractors resume abandoned road and infrastructure projects.

The proposed palm processing factory, once completed, is expected to become a landmark industrial project capable of boosting local production, creating jobs, supporting oil palm farmers, and accelerating economic growth in the Eastern Region and beyond.
