The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has disbursed a GH¢132,000 relief package, together with food supplies and sanitation equipment, to residents affected by recent flooding in four communities across the capital.
The intervention benefited flood victims in Avenor, Circle Neoplan Station, North Kaneshie, and Bubuashie, where heavy rains destroyed household items, displaced residents, and left communities grappling with the aftermath of the floods.
The support comprised GH¢130,000 in direct cash assistance to the affected communities, an additional GH¢2,000 to facilitate the removal of a structure obstructing a drainage channel, 31 boxes of cooking oil, 120 bags of rice, eight wheelbarrows, and eight shovels to aid recovery and clean-up efforts.
Mr Allotey said the relief package was presented on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and the area's Member of Parliament, Ernest Adomako, to provide immediate assistance to affected households.
He noted that the Assembly was still assessing the full extent of the damage and assured residents that additional support would be provided where necessary after the assessment.
The Mayor announced that the AMA had deployed refuse compactors and sanitation personnel to clear waste from the affected communities at no cost, describing the exercise as part of efforts to restore normalcy and reduce public health risks.
He also appealed to residents to refrain from dumping refuse into drains, warning that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes significantly to blocked drainage systems and recurring floods in the city.
He reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to working with community leaders and relevant agencies to desilt drains, remove obstructions, and implement long-term measures to minimise flooding across Accra.
Community leaders welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely support that would help affected families begin rebuilding their lives after the floods.
