Breaking Free from Charismatic Witchcraft

Breaking Free from Charismatic Witchcraft

On Fridays, if you drive around our cities and witness some of the prayer and prophetic services taking place, you would be shocked by the humiliation many of our poor mothers endure at the hands of some of these charlatans parading themselves as "prophets."

Our society has become inundated with what I describe as "charismatic witchcraft." It is a form of spiritual manipulation that makes people gullible and robs them of the ability to reason for themselves. It is built on fear, with excessive emphasis on witchcraft rather than on the power and sovereignty of God. It thrives by convincing people that unless they are prayed for, disaster is imminent and they may not even live to see the next day.

The result has been division, mistrust, and uneasiness within families and communities. Many victims become so emotionally and spiritually dependent on these individuals that counseling them becomes extremely difficult. They are trapped in a world of endless abstractions: “What would have happened if you had not come for prayer?” “You were supposed to have achieved this by now, but witchcraft is holding you back.” “Had you not done this, something terrible would have happened.” Such statements are repeated so often that they become a psychological prison.

Some of these fear mongering messages and enticing words are toxic not only to the believer’s spiritual growth but also to their mental well being. Once this toxin takes root, it often requires humility, sound biblical teaching, and genuine pastoral counseling for a person to break free from its grip.

It is worth knowing that, as believers, we must continually avail ourselves of sound doctrine and sincere prayer. Prayer that is driven by fear and fixated solely on witchcraft does not strengthen faith. Rather, it sinks us deeper into the storm and gradually takes our eyes off the victory we already have in Christ Jesus.

The Christian life is not meant to be governed by fear of unseen forces but by faith in the finished work of Christ. When our focus shifts from Christ’s power to constant fear of witchcraft, we gradually surrender the confidence the Gospel is meant to produce.

Breaking free from charismatic witchcraft is therefore not a rejection of prayer or spiritual gifts, but a return to truth, balance, and the centrality of Christ.
