WASSCE: School officials helped students cheat for years, but we now see the true performance — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has accused some headteachers and other officials of previously colluding to help candidates during examinations, saying the practice allowed students to earn grades that did not reflect their actual abilities and progress without acquiring the necessary foundational skills.

President Mahama made the remarks on Saturday, September 12, during a citizens' engagement at the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies in the Upper West Region as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour.

He said this year's improved invigilation has curbed the mass cheating that previously enabled such undue assistance, and that the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results now offer a more accurate reflection of students' true academic performance.

"And so today we're seeing the real results of our children because invigilation has improved and the mass cheating in exams you know has been curtailed," he said.

"One thing that I'm happy and proud of is that we're seeing our children's true results," he added.

Mahama noted that performance had improved in several subjects, including Mathematics and Social Studies, though he flagged a slight decline in Social Studies that government was investigating.

He stressed that students must earn their results through learning.
