Ghana has issued a travel advisory urging its nationals planning to visit South Africa to exercise extreme caution, avoid areas expected to witness protests, and reconsider all non-essential travel amid rising security concerns.
The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, follows planned nationwide demonstrations in South Africa and reports of heightened tensions linked to anti-foreign sentiment. The Ministry expressed concern that the situation could pose risks to foreign nationals, particularly African migrants.
In its statement, the Ministry advised Ghanaians to carefully assess their travel plans and stay away from areas where public gatherings, marches, or demonstrations are expected to take place. It also encouraged Ghanaians already residing in South Africa to limit unnecessary movement, especially during periods when the protests are anticipated to intensify.
According to the Ministry, the planned demonstrations could increase the risk of harassment or isolated incidents of violence. It therefore urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant in public places, including transport terminals, commercial centres, and entertainment districts.
The advisory also referred to assurances from South African authorities that there is no legally binding "departure deadline" and that security agencies are prepared to maintain public order throughout the demonstrations. Nevertheless, the Ministry stressed that Ghanaians should remain cautious given the unpredictable nature of mass protests.
The Ministry further advised Ghanaian nationals in South Africa to ensure that their travel documents remain valid and readily accessible, maintain regular contact with family members, and avoid travelling at night unless absolutely necessary. They were also urged to stay away from protest routes and any areas experiencing unrest.
The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has been designated as the primary point of contact for Ghanaian nationals requiring assistance through its emergency communication channels.
