THE "ICONIC LIVING STATUE"

Standing tall and strong for Africa
THE ICONIC LIVING STATUE

Introduction
Since 2013, a larger than life Congolese super fan has been turning himself into a living tribute to one of Africa's greatest sons, Patrice Emery Lumumba—the revolutionary, first democratically elected Prime Minister of Democratic Republic Of Congo (DRC), who dreamed of a proud and dignified Congo and Africa.

The Super Fan
This super fan, the "living statue" is Michel Nkuka Mboladinga (53 years old), popularly known as “Lumumba Vea,”. Lumumba Vea has become one of the most iconic and recognisable football supporters not only in DRC or Africa, but, the whole footballing world at large. Mboladinga has taken his unusual celebration and tribute paying antics to the global stage, the World Cup tournament. Throughout an entire match, he stands motionless, arm raised, perfectly recreating the famous Lumumba statue in Kinshasa (DRC Capital). From Lumumba Vea's hairstyle, his glasses, his suit, his posture, every detail is meticulously and intentionally crafted to mirror and resemble the father and founder of DRC independence, Patrice "Emery" Lumumba.

AFCON 2025-26 Sensation
Having made waves and captured all attention in the AFCON tournament, where Mboladinga stood frozen for a staggering 438 minutes across a span of DRC's four matches at the AFCON tournament, it was natural and logical, that the next stop for this out of this world tribute- celebration would be the world cup tournament. All seemed set, alas, another set of battles had begun for Mboladinga.

Challenges
En route to DRC qualifications, the iconic statuesque fan, Mboladinga was denied a visa for the crucial April 2026 World Cup play-off match of DRC against Jamaica in Guadalajara, Mexico. Unable to attend, he did not sit down and cry instead he stood for the full 120 minutes in front of a giant screen in Kinshasa to watch the DRC qualify for their first World Cup in 52 years. At the current World Cup tournament, Mboladinga was delayed due to a combination of stringent Ebola health quarantine protocols and visa application complications, missing DRC's first match against Portugal. But some dreams refuse to die. The African dream could not die.Lumumba Vea refused to sit down.

Arrival
Against all odds, he finally arrived at the tournament. Not as a celebrity, not as a rich man, not as a politician, but as a symbol. A living symbol of history, of resistance, of resilience and of an African dream. A man whose only weapon and qualification is love for his country and continent. Reminding all that sometimes heroes simply stand quiet, silent and determined. And he did exactly that, that’s why the world finally stopped…

And asked.....who is this super fan (Mboladinga) paying tribute to and for what?

Tribute For & Story Of.....
It is tribute for and story about Patrice "Emery" Lumumba, a DRC independence war hero and the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the D DRC. Patrice "Emery" Lumumba was born Isaïe Tasumbu Tawosa, 2nd July 1925 in Onalua, a small village in the Katakokombe region of the Kasai province of the then Belgian Congo (now DRC). Born in a small Batetela ethnic group. Interestingly, he was also widely referred to by his Tetela name, Élias Okit'Asombo. Okit'Asombo is derived from Tetela words that loosely translate to "cursed or bewitched people who will die quickly" , and at 35 years of age, Lumumba was gone, assassinated in the most brutal fashion. He had acquired his French first name,"Patrice" (meaning Patrick), from a local priest .

Character
Patrice "Emery" Lumumba, a charismatic, firebrand, passionate and militant orator, a nationalist and pan- Africanist had a brief political career, defined by fierce anti-colonialism, a vision for a unified Congo, and a steadfast pan-African ideology.

Political Career
Initially, working as a postal clerk and writer, Lumumba emerged as a voice for the _évolués_ (Western-educated Africans) against colonialism. Patrice Lumumba helped found the Congolese National Movement (MNC), a more nationalistic political party. Lumumba attended the 1958 first All-African People's Conference in Ghana, where he cemented his anti-imperialist views. After being released from prison to specifically attend the Congo independence deal, Patrice Lumumba emerged as the central and most influential figure, the moral center at the Brussels Belgo-Congolese Round Table Conference in early 1960.

Prime Minister
Following the democratic elections in May 1960, the MNC won a plurality, allowing Lumumba to form a coalition government and become the nation's Prime Minister on June 24, 1960. On June 30, 1960, the day the Congo officially achieved independence, Lumumba famously delivered an unscheduled, prompt, defiant speech. A speech that directly challenged the present Belgian King Baudouin, and the narrative that colonialism benefited Africa by powerfully recounting the horrors and abuses of colonial dispensation and outlining his vision for a dignified, self-reliant nation. According to historians, it was this 30 June 1960 speech that sealed his fate.

Assassination
Lumumba was in the office for exactly *67 days.* He took office on June 30, 1960 and was ousted by a political coup on September 5, 1960. After that he was arrested, flown to the seccessionst territory of Katanga, tortured, shot by a firing squad on the night of 17th of January 1961somewhere in Katanga forest and his body would later be cut into pieces and dissolved in sulphuric acid. For the next 60 years, one of the greatest sons of Africa was dead but with no grave in Africa.

Apology
It was in 2002, that for the first time that Belgium, following a parliamentary inquiry, officially acknowledged "moral responsibility" and issued a formal apology to Patrice "Emery" Lumumba’s family and the Congolese people for Belgium's role in the brutal assassination of Patrice "Emery" Lumumba. In 2022, Belgium, for the second time apologized again for it role in the death of Lumumba. This followed the return of "a tooth" to DRC, "a tooth" supposedly belonging to Patrice "Emery" Lumumba, kept by one of his killer's daughters as a souvenir in Belgium being returned back to DRC for an official national burial. And today the single tooth is buried in Lumumba's concrete mausoleum in Kinshasa.

Questions
Who committed such horrendous crime?, neocolonial forced. Has anyone ever prosecuted for his brutal death?, to date none. What was Patrice Lumumba's crime?, nationalisation of Congo mineral wealth.

The Message
The message and story is symbolized in this "iconic living statue" and this "iconic living statue" is the message and the story. As Mboladinga stands frozen, motionless for the 90 minutes, many see an unusual way of expressing football passion, many see a bizarre celebration style, many see an unbelievable feat, many see an unforgettable spectacle... but behind the living statue, this is the message and story Mboladinga is silently speaking and communicating to the world- the story of Patrice "Emery" Lumumba, and a message from Patrice Lumumba's non-existent grave....asking the same old question, a question Patrice Lumumba asked decades long back and paid with his dear life... when will Africa own and benefit from its mineral wealth?
