Nkwanta North NDC petition party leadership over suspension of branch elections 

Some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nkwanta North Constituency, Oti Region, have petitioned the party's Regional and National Executive Committees over the suspension of scheduled branch elections in the constituency.

The petitioners said the Constituency Executive Committee, at a meeting held on June 21, resolved to suspend the elections; a decision they claimed had generated concern among members and aspirants.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Wumbei Joseph, convenor of the group, said the decision had raised questions about adherence to due process and the party's internal electoral calendar.

“The suspension raises concerns about internal democracy and transparency. We believe such decisions should be guided strictly by the party's constitution and preceded by broad consultation,” he said.

According to the petitioners, the suspension has denied members the opportunity to elect their branch executives as scheduled.

They also expressed concern over what they described as inadequate consultation with branch executives, aspirants, and the wider party membership before the decision was announced.

The group indicated that the development, if not addressed, could undermine confidence and unity within the constituency.

Mr Martin Kudor, a former District Chief Executive for Nkwanta North, who supports the petition, said members had not been provided with any clear constitutional, legal, or administrative justification for the suspension.

“The absence of an official explanation has created uncertainty among grassroots members,” he stated.

The petitioners are therefore calling on the party's Regional and National Executive Committees to investigate the circumstances surrounding the decision and determine whether it conforms to the NDC's constitution and regulations.

They also appealed for a review of the suspension and urged the appropriate authorities to ensure that the elections either proceed as scheduled or are rescheduled in accordance with laid-down procedures.

The petitioners further called on the party leadership to safeguard members' democratic rights and uphold the credibility of the NDC's internal electoral processes, stressing that transparent and constitutionally grounded elections are essential to maintaining unity and strengthening grassroots mobilisation.
