Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mawutor Agbavitor, has used the celebration of his birthday to call on individuals and organisations to support the less privileged in society through acts of kindness and generosity.

As part of the celebration, Hon. Agbavitor who shares a birthday with the founder of the party which falls on 22nd June embarked on a donation exercise on Friday 19th June 2026.

The exercise which was attended by party executives, his family members and members of the party began at his former school, Philip Akpo Memorial Roman Catholic JHS where he spent time interacting with pupils through songs and dancing before presenting the donations. The team later visited E.P. JHS Bankoe, Ho Central Prisons and finally the Ho Teaching Hospital to extend similar support.

The donations included food items, soft drinks, biscuits, rice, sugar, detergent, soap, stationery, face masks, pens, exercise books, erasers, towels and school bags for children. At the Ho Teaching Hospital, he also settled the medical bills of some patients to enable them to return home after treatment.

Speaking during the exercise, Mr Agbavitor said the initiative was inspired by his personal conviction that those who are blessed should extend a helping hand to others.

"I believe in sharing with people. My little commitment to myself is that whenever God blesses me, I should also be helpful and become a blessing to others," he said.

Mr Agbavitor stressed that although his contribution was modest, it reflected the need for more members of society to support vulnerable people.

"I have just given very little. I expect that other people will also come and contribute. The prison service made several appeals. Even the schools have children who need support to continue their education. Here at the hospital, I had to pay hospital bills before some parents could take their children home. Some people only need a little help to pay for laboratory tests, scans or medication. I encourage everyone who believes they owe something to society to support those around them," he said.

Responding to suggestions that the exercise was intended to boost his political visibility ahead of the NDC's regional executive elections, Mr Agbavitor dismissed the claim, insisting that the donations had no political motive.

"It has nothing to do with gaining visibility for the upcoming party executive elections. I am already a very visible person. I am already the chairman, so I don't need to do anything to be seen. This is simply a day I chose to mark by supporting others. There is nothing political about it," he stated.

Addressing pupils at his alma mater, Mr Agbavitor encouraged them to value education, sharing his own life story to demonstrate how determination and hard work could transform lives regardless of one's background.

He recalled that he attended the school from an early age, writing the Common Entrance Examination at 9 1⁄2 years old before entering secondary school before his 10th birthday. He said his early academic progress was made possible because his mother, who was a Class One teacher, introduced him to school at a very young age.

"My parents were teachers and they believed education was the only path to success. Without education, I would not be where I am today. It should encourage all of you to know that where you start in life does not determine where you will end," he told the pupils.

Describing education as a gradual process, he compared schooling to building a house brick by brick, urging students to remain committed even when they encountered challenges in subjects or relationships with classmates.

He advised the pupils to focus on three important principles for success. The first, he said, was to always show up and make an effort.

"It doesn't matter whether you are first or last in class. What matters is that you try. If you try today and fail, it is better than planning to try tomorrow because tomorrow is never guaranteed," he said.

Secondly, he encouraged them to ask questions whenever they did not understand something, explaining that seeking clarification was a sign of wisdom rather than weakness.

"It is only fools who pretend they know everything. Wise people ask questions because that is how they gain understanding," he noted.

His final piece of advice was for the pupils to choose their friends carefully, warning that friendships could either influence them positively or lead them away from their goals.

Before concluding, Mr Agbavitor challenged the children to strive to become just one per cent better each day, saying consistent self-improvement would eventually lead them to greater achievements. He urged them to dream big, remain disciplined and continue praying for God's guidance in their lives while asking them to also remember him in their prayers for good health, success and greater service to society.
