Ken Ofori-Atta’s Immigration Issues Have Sparked Debate Over U.S. Hypocrisy

Feature Article Ken Ofori-Atta’s Immigration Issues Have Sparked Debate Over U.S. Hypocrisy

The decision by the U.S. immigration judge raises serious questions and, in my view, does a disservice to the American people, It is difficult to understand how Ken Ofori-Atta, who reportedly violated U.S. immigration laws and spent time in a detention facility, could ultimately be granted permanent residency.

This outcome appears particularly inconsistent when compared with the U.S. government's efforts to deport all undocumented foreigners. Hypocritically the America government is requesting extradition of Ghanaians and Nigerians accused of romance scams and other crimes.

Granting permanent residency to an individual who is widely perceived as avoiding legal accountability in his home country creates an impression of double standards.

Ken Ofori-Atta reportedly left Ghana on the basis that he was travelling to the United States for medical treatment and would return by the end of January 2025. His continued absence and subsequent application for permanent residency have fueled public perceptions that he is seeking to avoid scrutiny and accountability.

Even while facing health challenges, he remained in office as Finance Minister for an extended period without resigning, leaving many to question his willingness to discharge his responsibilities fully, he ignored calls by his colleagues Members of Parliament to step aside. He was finally reshuffled to the Presidency by President Nana Akuffo Addo. Therefore his conduct so far has led some observers to conclude that he is reluctant to return to Ghana to account for his stewardship.

Equally surprising is the reaction of members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), many of whom have shown little public concern over the reputational impact of these developments. To some critics, their response suggests a coordinated effort to coverup actions taken during their time in government, hence the jubilation of the green card to be granted to Ken Ofori Atta.

The reported decision to grant Ken Ofori-Atta permanent residency in the United States is one that many Ghanaians will struggle to understand. it raises legitimate questions about consistency, accountability, and the perception of equal treatment under the law.

Given these circumstances, some Ghanaians believe that pursuing his extradition may prove futile, arguing that U.S. authorities are unlikely to act against someone with significant economic interests in their country.
