The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned an alleged sexual misconduct involving a teacher and a student of Bole Senior High School in the Savannah Region.
The condemnation follows the interdiction of the teacher by the Ghana Education Service (GES) after a video purportedly showing the alleged act surfaced on social media.
GES, on Tuesday, June 16, confirmed that it had launched investigations into the matter while the teacher remains interdicted pending the outcome of the probe.
In a social media statement, NUGS President Rashid Ibrahim described the incident as unacceptable and a breach of professional ethics.
“NUGS is deeply disturbed by the video circulating on social media showing a teacher of Bole SHS engaging in a sexual act with a female student,” he stated.
He stressed that the conduct violates the ethical standards expected of teachers under the GES Code of Conduct.
“This conduct is completely unacceptable and goes against the professional and ethical standards expected of teachers. The GES Code of Conduct clearly prohibits any sexual relationship between a teacher and a student,” he added.
NUGS further cautioned against normalising such incidents, noting that teachers must uphold their responsibility as mentors and protectors of students.
The student body also expressed concern about what it described as repeated cases of exploitation of young girls by persons in positions of authority, noting that many victims remain silent due to fear and stigma.
It called on authorities to ensure a swift investigation and appropriate sanctions against anyone found culpable, while urging the public to support efforts aimed at making schools safer.
According to NUGS, safeguarding the dignity and welfare of students must remain a priority for all stakeholders in the education sector.
