The suspended Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has appealed to striking staff to return to duty, expressing appreciation for their support while leaving the outcome of his suspension to the Health Minister and the hospital’s board.

In a letter dated Monday, June 8, 2026, and addressed to all staff of KATH, Dr. Baidoo thanked workers for what he described as their solidarity during his suspension but urged them to prioritise patient care by resuming work.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff of the hospital for your show of solidarity with me during this period. I am very grateful for your support,” the letter stated.

“However, I need you all to return back to duty in the supreme interest of Ghanaians and our valued patients, whilst I defer the outcome and directions to the supreme wisdom of the Hon. Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh (MP), and the Board of KATH.”

The Health Minister, in a letter dated June 5, 2026, directed the KATH Board to suspend Dr. Baidoo for two weeks following his decision to temporarily halt emergency admissions at the hospital on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, due to severe congestion at the Accident and Emergency Centre.

Management had explained that the move was intended to decongest the overcrowded unit, which has been under pressure from increasing referrals across the middle and northern parts of the country. KATH serves as a major tertiary referral centre for more than eight regions.

Following the suspension, the Komfo Anokye branch of the Ghana Medical Association announced an indefinite withdrawal of services, demanding the reversal of the CEO’s suspension and the introduction of clear guidelines for handling situations where emergency capacity is exceeded.

At the national level, the Ghana Medical Association has also called for Dr. Baidoo’s immediate reinstatement, warning of further action if the Health Minister continues what it describes as “hostile and confrontational actions” against health workers.

In his letter, Dr. Baidoo reaffirmed his commitment to President John Dramani Mahama’s administration while urging calm and a return to normalcy at the hospital.

“I remain committed to the cause of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana,” he stated.

The letter did not indicate whether he had reversed the earlier directive on emergency admissions or whether any discussions had taken place with the Health Ministry or the hospital board regarding his suspension.

As of Monday, June 8, 2026, the industrial action at KATH remained ongoing, with the hospital operating with reduced staff, affecting patient care and emergency services. The KATH Board is still engaged in discussions with the leadership of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association aimed at resolving the impasse, but no agreement has yet been announced.
