Bryan Acheampong calls for increased investment in Ghanaian teachers

Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has called on government to increase investment in teachers and improve funding for teacher training institutions across the country.

He criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, accusing it of failing to adequately prioritise teacher funding in the 2025 national budget.

Speaking at the Founder’s Day and fundraising event at the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education on Friday, May 29, the Abetifi MP said government must align policy commitments with financial allocation to reflect respect for teachers.

“Policy must match rhetoric. The respect we say we have for teachers must be visible in the budgets we set for those who train them,” he said.

“Out of the almost 300 billion cedis in the 2025 budget, a total of 31 billion was allocated to education… only 203 million, less than 0.1%, was devoted for teacher training allowances,” he stated.

Dr. Acheampong also raised concerns about teacher retention in rural areas, citing the absence of key incentive programmes.

The one-time NPP flagbearer aspirant noted that promised interventions such as rural housing schemes and incentive allowances for teachers had yet to be implemented.

The Abetifi MP further cautioned that gaps in infrastructure and training could undermine the quality of future education delivery, particularly in a rapidly evolving digital learning environment.

“The infrastructural gaps are not administrative problems, they are national problems,” he said.
