Political scientist at the University of Ghana, Joshua Zaato, says Ghana’s new legal education framework is likely to reshape long-established law schools and increase competition among universities.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Zaato said the reforms introduced after President John Dramani Mahama signed the Legal Education Reform Bill (2025) could change how legal training is delivered across the country.
He pointed to the expansion of professional legal education beyond the traditional monopoly, warning that established institutions may now face internal competition.
“There is a kind of cannibalisation coming in,” he said, referring to possible competition among existing legal training centres.
Zaato also referenced ongoing infrastructure developments, including new law faculty facilities, suggesting that expansion is already underway within universities such as the University of Ghana.
He said the new system will likely enforce strict standards that only a few institutions can meet.
“The standards that are going to be set are going to be very high. Few universities may be able to meet them,” he noted.
According to him, traditional universities may be better positioned to adapt due to stronger academic resources and faculty capacity.
