Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei Asare, has confirmed the death of seven people following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Asamang Tamfoe.

The MP described the incident as a tragic loss and extended her condolences to the bereaved families and residents of the community.

In a social media post on Monday, August 31, the lawmaker called for renewed attention to safety and responsible mining practices to prevent similar incidents from occurring in mining communities.

“The loss of seven lives under such tragic circumstances is a profound tragedy, and words cannot adequately express the pain and sorrow that this incident has brought upon the affected families," she wrote.

She expressed sympathy to the families, friends and the wider Asamang Tamfoe community following the deaths.

Ms Osei Asare also acknowledged the efforts of the relevant authorities, community members and emergency responders involved in the aftermath of the incident.

She said the tragedy should serve as a reminder of the need to prioritise human life in mining activities.

“Beyond our grief, this tragedy calls for renewed attention to safety and responsible mining practices. The protection of human life must remain paramount.”

The MP urged all stakeholders to take steps to ensure that mining activities are conducted responsibly and safely to prevent avoidable deaths.
