Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has criticised Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor over comments surrounding Ghana’s legal education reforms, accusing him of creating confusion among prospective law students.
The criticism follows President John Dramani Mahama’s assent to the Legal Education Bill 2026, a law expected to widen access to professional legal training.
After the signing ceremony, Dafeamekpor described the law as a major breakthrough and said it would expand opportunities for students seeking legal education.
But Assafuah says the celebrations have overlooked concerns about the transition process and the status of entrance examinations already scheduled by the Independent Examination Council.
According to him, Dafeamekpor earlier suggested that no entrance exams had been officially announced, a statement he believes gave students the wrong impression.
“It is reckless for him to toy with the future of law students by creating the impression that there would be no examinations,” Assafuah stated.
He noted that despite explanations that the Independent Examination Council handles the examinations, the Majority Chief Whip failed to address the issue directly.
The Old Tafo MP said government must now move quickly to clear doubts surrounding implementation of the new law.
“We, on the Minority side, welcome the presidential assent as a step in the right direction,” he said. “Nonetheless, there remains an urgent need for clarity on the implementation of the law and its immediate implications for current prospective students.”
Assafuah also called for an apology over what he described as unnecessary anxiety caused to students and parents during the public debate.
“To my colleagues, parents, and all law students across the country, your dreams remain valid and attainable,” he added.
