Viral sewage contamination claims against Ghana Water false — GWL

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating on social media that a burst company pipeline inside an overflowing sewage chamber is contaminating its potable water supply.

The clarification follows the circulation of a viral video alleging that sewage was entering Ghana Water's distribution system through a damaged pipeline located in a sewage chamber.

This has raised concerns among sections of the public about the safety of the company's drinking water.

In response, the company said it immediately dispatched a team of engineers and technical experts to inspect the location and determine the authenticity of the claims.

The inspection, according to GWL, found that "the pipeline shown is not a Ghana Water Ltd pipeline. It is a trunk sewer inlet pipeline designed to convey wastewater into the sewage chamber as part of the sewerage system."

The company explained that its investigation established there was no Ghana Water pipeline within the sewage chamber and that there was no burst, damaged or exposed GWL pipeline at the site.

It stressed that the allegation that sewage was contaminating its water distribution system had no factual or technical basis.

GWL further assured the public that its potable water infrastructure is completely separate from sewerage systems and is designed to prevent any interaction between drinking water and wastewater.

It added that water supplied to consumers undergoes rigorous treatment, continuous operational monitoring and routine laboratory testing to ensure it meets the Ghana Standards Authority's drinking water quality standards.

"The Company therefore urges the public to disregard the misleading video and rely only on verified information from Ghana Water Ltd's official communication channels," they stressed.
