
A 31-year-old woman is in police custody in the Western North Region for allegedly inflicting severe harm on her 9-year-old daughter as punishment for returning home late.
The suspect, identified as Vivian Anto of Sefwi Proso, is assisting the Ghana Police Service with investigations into the incident, which has sparked outrage in the Juaboso District.
According to a police situational report, the case was reported on April 3, 2026, at about 4:20 p.m. by a relative, Stephen Anto, who alerted authorities to the alleged assault.
Police say the incident occurred earlier that morning at about 9:30 a.m., when the suspect allegedly used a pair of scissors to cut the right index toe of the child, identified as Diana Boakye.
The victim was rushed to the Kofikrom SDA Hospital, where she is receiving treatment and is reported to be responding, while officers who visited the facility confirmed the injury.
Investigators say the severed toe has been retrieved and preserved as evidence as inquiries continue into the circumstances of the case.
Police have indicated that the suspect will be put before court after the Easter break as investigations proceed.
