NCA moves to end Next-Gen Infraco’s 5G exclusivity

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced plans to amend the license of Next-Gen Infraco (NGIC), removing the clause that grants the company exclusivity over 5G services in Ghana.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, pursuant to Section 14 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), the Authority explained that the proposed amendment is intended to serve the public interest by promoting competition and innovation, enhancing consumer choice and service quality, accelerating digital transformation, and ensuring efficient use of spectrum resources.

“The amendment is expected to take effect within 90 days of the notice, unless otherwise determined after consideration of any representations made by NGIC during the statutory period,” the statement read.

The NCA assured the public that the move follows due process and aligns with its mandate to regulate communications services in a manner that safeguards national interest.

Meanwhile, NGIC has rolled out forty-nine 5G sites across the country. Of these, forty-three are located in the Greater Accra Region, two in the Ashanti Region, and one each in the Western, Northern, Bono, and Central regions, reflecting the company’s initial steps toward nationwide coverage.

The Authority further disclosed that NGIC is in default of its license fee instalment payment under the agreed schedule. It noted that the matter is being addressed in line with license conditions and statutory provisions.

The NCA reaffirmed its commitment to transparent, fair, and predictable regulation to ensure sustainable investment, competition, and growth in Ghana’s communications sector.
