Mahama orders immediate care for all emergency patients

President John Dramani Mahama has directed that patients facing medical emergencies must be received and treated immediately at health facilities, even under makeshift conditions.

“You don't need a comfortable bed to save a patient; no patient must be turned away from any health facility they report to,” he said.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament, President Mahama said the Ministry of Health would issue guidelines to eliminate the unacceptable “no bed syndrome.”

He said the government would expand hospital capacity through the Ridge Hospital Phase Two Project to increase bed space at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.

He added that work would continue and be completed on the Police Hospital project and the La General Hospital.

In the Ashanti Region, President Mahama said Government would complete the Sewuah Regional Hospital, the Afari Military Hospital, and the maternity and children's block of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

He reaffirmed Government's commitment to building a stronger, more resilient, and self-reliant health system for Ghanaians.

President Mahama said the 2026 budget included provisions to commence construction of new regional hospitals in the Oti, Savannah, and Western North regions.
