The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has disclosed that the Komenda Sugar Factory has been cut off from the national electricity grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana and has also had its water supply terminated by Ghana Water Limited due to outstanding utility bills.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, February 17, the sector minister, Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare, said although the factory has the capacity to make a meaningful contribution to national development, recurring technical and operational setbacks have prevented it from operating at full scale.
“The factory has been disconnected from the national grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana and water supply by Ghana Water Company Limited due to unpaid bills. Added to the poor state of the equipment, the facility has accumulated significant debts,” he stated.
The minister further revealed that government has engaged a transaction advisor to attract a strategic investor to rehabilitate and fully operationalise the facility.
“Given the importance the government attaches to the factory, the Ministry has prioritised the engagement of a transaction advisor to package the factory and secure a strategic investor to operationalise the factory and farms in the 2026 budget,” he added.
