Football Imperialism: Angola Paid USD$12 -USD$13 Million To Argentina For An International Friendly Match

Introduction
On the 17th of July 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) entered into a shocking US$46,37 million sponsorship deal with Spanish football club FC Barcelona. Now its the turn for Angola, paying out between US$12_US$13 million for a 90 minute international friendly match between Angolan national team against Lionel Messi captained and led Argentina on the 14th of November 2025. And the big question in all such deals is how majority of DRC and Angolan citizens going or are supposed to benefit from such stunning, exorbitant and costly deals by their respective governments. Definetely these are wrong strategies by African nations to impress the world whilst their Rdown citizens are languishing in poverty and unimaginable suffering.Their citizens are going hungry with no food security, no access clean and safe water for drinking, no cheaper and affordable energy sources, no access to quality health care, education or decent shelter, but authorities have the nerve to shell out millions of dollars for a 90 minutes football match.

The Occasion
Angola 's 50th Independence Celebration

The international friendly match between defending world cup champions, Argentina and the southern African nation Angola was organized to celebrate Angola's 50th Independence anniversary. For the government of Angola, the fixture was meant to be a symbol of national honor and pride. To honour the day 11 November 1975, when Angola attained its independence from Portugal.

"This is not just a football match; it’s a meeting of histories”

said Pedro Mutarro, president of the Angolan Football Federation.

"Argentina represents the pinnacle of world football and we want to show the world that Angola, too, has a place on that stage"

added Pedro
Defending this decision, Angolan officials called the event

"a strategic investment in national pride and international visibility ".

adding,
" The 50th anniversary is a once-in-a-lifetime moment”

said a government spokesperson.
"This celebration honors our journey from war to peace – and football, as always, brings people together".

the government spokesperson emphasized.
However, the decision to celebrate the 50th Angolan independence anniversary by organising this outrageously, exorbitant, extravagant and costly international friendly match represented everything wrong not only with Angola, but the rest of Africa - misplaced priorities.

The Cost
According to data cited in the civic organisations protest letter, the Angolan government spent US$12–US$13 million to secure Argentina’s presence for the Luanda match and another *US$13.6 million* for the refurbishment of the Luanda 11 de Novembro National Stadium.Unconfirmed reports say there was even a quirky “€6 million per goal ” clause.

The Match
Argentina closed the 2025 sporting year with a friendly match — and surprisingly, against the oil rich, 85th Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) ranked, Southern African nation of Angola. Angola, a team that did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup after all. Many questioned why the reigning world champions, led by Lionel Messi, would travel so far for a single match, with a team that did not even for 2026 world cup?- the answer was) is to be found in the paycheck. Argentina would receive a staggering US$12 million pay out just for appearance at the Luanda stadium, the Estadio 11 De Novembro, (Making it one of the most expensive international friendlies in history of world football). The tickets were sold for $1 to host Messi and Argentina. That said, the ticket prices at the *48,000-capacity venue* were nominal by global standards. According to various African news portals, tickets were priced between US$1.6 (1,500 Kwanzas). According to the Angolan Federation, since this is a popular celebration, the cost of a ticket to see the match was 1,000 kwanzas, which is just US$1 at the current exchange rate. Though some reports puts the tickets at a price of US$6 to US$60.

Played at the Estadio 11 De Novembro in Talatona, Luanda, Angola, Friday 14 November 2025. The game ended with Angola being defeated 2-0 by Argentina. Thanks to a goal in the 43rd minute by Lautaro Martinez for Argentina and the other goal came in 82nd minutes of the game from Lionel Messi. This saw Argentina emerging victorious in this international friendly match. Angola was defeated. But the defeat was symbolic. The defeat represented defeat of social justice not only for Angola but Africa as well. For the funds utilized to have this match played considered in there context of Angola socio-economic realities - a nation which just 4 months, precisely 15 - 18 July 2025 was battling demonstrations due to anger caused by harsh economic environment_ is not only shocking but appalling.Would it have not made much sense that such huge funds be directed to improve the infrastructure or welfare of struggling Africans and in this case, Angolans?

Ignoring Starving Children To See Lionel Messi

Angolan local media and online publicxx opinion did not take kindly to this decision by Angolan authorities. Questioning the conscience of it all.. "a country that ignores it's starving children to see Messi".

Five civic groups jointly penned and issued out a statement publicly condemning the government. Navita Ngolo of opposition UNITA part pointed out that while millions are poured into football,

"thousands of Angolan children continue to die every day from hunger, cholera, malaria and lack of basic sanitation”

According to the 2025 Global Hunger Index, more than a fifth (22.5,%) of Angolans are malnourished and nearly half of children under 5 years (47.7%) are stunted. More than half (53%) of the population live on less than US$3.65 a day. Meanwhile, I Angola is grappling with serious social problems.Nearly 48% of children suffer stunted growth, over 22% of the population is undernourished, and many families are forced to do scavenge for food- whilst millions are poured on seeing Messi. It is disturbing, mindboggling, perplexing and baffling indeed.

Meanwhile, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has not commented on the profit structure of this away friendly. As the World Cup defending champions and a team featuring Messi, they appear to prioritize profit,"box office over competitiveness"

This is not the first time the match has drawn criticism. Back in mid-August, four Angolan organisations wrote an open letter to the Argentine Football Association (AFA), the national team and Lionel Messi urging the cancellation of this 11 November match. That letter came after weeks of protest over a fuel price hike faced a brutal police crackdown, resulting in at least 30 people killed, over 270 injured and some 1,500 arrests.

Where is social justice in all this?
An open letter from Angolan civil society groups claims that such excessive spending

“blatantly clashes with the grave socioeconomic reality the country faces”.

The letter accused Angolan government of
"prioritising flashy large-scale sporting events over the basic needs of Angolan people-This practice constitutes an affront to the principles of social justice, public accountability and good governance”.

the protest letter emphasised, further pointing out that such extravagancy displays indicated

“a profound disconnection between political decisions and the real needs of the Angolan people”.

Misplaced Priorities
This football fixture will definitely go down as another classic case of shocking and misplaced priorities by African authorities in Africa. Surely, this is a wrong way of Africa trying to impress the world. While some like the Angolan authorities saw the fixture as an opportunity to showcase the nation's image on the international stage, it should and needs to be emphasized that,

"football should not be funded at the expense of more urgent development priorities".

Such huge funds could have been directed towards developing sports infrastructure, supporting local clubs or non- existent up youth football policy in many African countries. For a country that is facing economic and social challenges, spending such huge funds is incomprehensible.

Conclusion
Angola lost just a simple football match, but Africa has lost on social justice. Those huge funds could have been channelled elsewhere to assist millions of Africa in this case Angolans struggling for sports infrastructure, for quality health care, for access to clean and safe drinking water. This game of African development needs authorities to focus also on promoting and preserving social justice. Why Africa continues to invest into things or deals which do not in any way help majority of it's suffering citizens will always remain disturbing ànd mindboggling... WHY?

That's the behaviour of a government that steals from its own people. Whoever made the deal with the argentines, has, surely, had some financial gain out of it. A practice that the local authorities are often used to carry out.
