The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has revealed that the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, was close to rejoining the NDC before her passing on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Nana Konadu, wife of the NDC’s founder and former President Jerry John Rawlings, played a pivotal role in the party’s formation and was widely celebrated for her leadership in championing women’s empowerment through the 31st December Women’s Movement.
After losing the NDC’s presidential primary in 2011, she broke away to form the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012. Though disqualified from contesting that year’s election, she later ran as the NDP’s presidential candidate in 2016.
Speaking after leading an NDC delegation to her residence on Monday, October 27, Fifi Kwetey disclosed that reconciliation talks between Nana Konadu and the party had reached an advanced stage before her death.
“I wouldn’t say the talks were unsuccessful; it was more about timing. Even on her part, you could clearly see that she was ready,” he stated.
Mr. Kwetey explained that the NDC had long acknowledged Nana Konadu’s instrumental role in building the party and had been working to heal old divisions.
“We have always recognised the critical role she played in establishing this party and making it strong. Despite the challenges over the years, we believed it was important to put those differences behind us. I’m happy that before her passing, those reconciliation efforts had begun, and she embraced them,” he said.
He described Nana Konadu as an iconic figure whose courage, leadership, and unwavering advocacy for women’s rights will continue to inspire generations within and beyond the NDC.
“The party will miss her dearly,” he added.
