Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings changed the face of Ghana’s First Lady role — Oye Bampoe-Addo

Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration, Nana Oye Bampoe-Addo, has eulogised the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, describing her as a trailblazer who redefined the role of Ghana’s First Lady.

Nana Oye said the National Democratic Party (NDP) went beyond ceremonial duties to influence policies and empower women across the country.

Speaking to the media during a visit to the residence of the late stateswoman, the Deputy Chief of Staff noted that Nana Konadu’s activism and leadership inspired a generation of women to take up roles in politics and national development.

“She changed the face of the role of the First Lady. Our previous First Ladies were not as active as she was, but she made the role of the First Lady one that helped their respective husbands to also develop the country,” Nana Oye said.

According to her, the late First Lady’s influence extended beyond Ghana, as she mobilised women across Africa and championed policies that protected widows and children.

“One significant achievement was the promulgation of the PNDC Law 111, the intestate succession law. From then until now, women are not sacked from their houses when their husbands die, and children are not left destitute because of Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings,” she noted.

Nana Oye further commended the former First Lady’s courage and boldness, recalling her famous words to Ghanaian women to “be bold” in pursuit of their dreams.
