The Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to the United States, Washington DC, His Excellency Victor Emmanuel Smith, has paid tribute to the Former First Lady of Ghana, Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on Thursday in Accra.
In a press statement, he stated, “I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady of the Republic of Ghana and a towering figure in our nation’s political development.”
He highlighted that Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings introduced him to active politics in the early 1990s, when he returned from the United Kingdom in 1994, which offered him the opportunity and space to begin his journey in public service. He expressed gratitude for the impact Nana Konadu has made in his life and the role she played in shaping his career.
“I remain eternally grateful for the belief she had in my potential and for the pivotal role she played in shaping my political life,” he stated.
He added that he will remember her for the significant impact she made on him, the countless women she inspired, and on Ghana’s democratic progress. He recounted that he was looking forward to a reconnection with Nana Konadu and expressed disappointment that the opportunity would no longer present itself.
“I was hopeful that time would afford us the chance to reconnect fully. Sadly, that opportunity will no longer come in the way I had imagined,” he added.
He extended his condolences to the children of the late Nana Konadu and expressed his intent to reaffirm the close relationship they once shared.
“To her beloved children, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, and Kimathi. I extend my heartfelt condolences, love, and solidarity. We were once a close family unit, and I wish to reaffirm my hand of friendship and support during this painful moment.”
“Ghana has lost a bold, visionary, and courageous leader, a champion of women’s empowerment and a key factor in shaping our political history. Her legacy will stand tall for generations”. he concluded.
