The Ghana Police Service has entered into a landmark partnership with the New York Police Department (NYPD) to enhance intelligence sharing, law enforcement training, and technology-driven policing between the two institutions.
The agreement, finalised during a high-level visit by Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to the NYPD headquarters at One Police Plaza on October 14, 2025, establishes a framework for bilateral cooperation that will see officers from both countries stationed at each other’s headquarters.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Ghana Police Service said the collaboration forms part of efforts to deepen security and law enforcement relations between Ghana and the United States.
Under the new arrangement, the NYPD will assign a liaison officer to the Ghana Police Service headquarters in Accra through its International Liaison Unit, while Ghana will post a counterpart officer to the NYPD’s Regional Intelligence Support Centre in New York.
The exchange is expected to facilitate real-time intelligence sharing, improve operational coordination, and strengthen professional development through modern training initiatives.
During bilateral discussions with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and her executive team, IGP Yohuno identified technology-led policing, counterterrorism, intelligence-based operations, and urban crime prevention as key areas of collaboration.
Commissioner Tisch briefed the Ghanaian delegation on the NYPD’s integrated security systems, including the use of high-tech surveillance cameras, real-time crime centres, and drone networks that support rapid incident response.
Mr. Yohuno, who witnessed a live demonstration of how the NYPD deploys drone and camera technology to monitor criminal activity, praised the department’s innovative approach to policing.
“Seeing firsthand how the NYPD uses drones and real-time surveillance to prevent crime underscores the importance of adopting technology in modern policing,” he said. “The Ghana Police Service is committed to applying similar smart policing tools to make our communities safer and more secure.”
Commissioner Tisch commended Ghana’s increasing role in regional peace and security and reaffirmed the NYPD’s readiness to support the partnership through training, intelligence collaboration, and joint operational initiatives.
The IGP and his delegation also toured the NYPD’s Joint Operations and Counterterrorism Centres, where they observed how data-driven policing and interagency coordination enhance safety in large metropolitan areas.
Before visiting the NYPD, Mr. Yohuno held separate meetings at the FBI New York Field Office to discuss joint strategies for combating cybercrime, transnational fraud, and terrorism.
According to the Ghana Police Service, both engagements were facilitated by the FBI Legal Attaché Office and the United States Embassy in Accra. The partnership marks a significant step forward in strengthening Ghana-US security relations and tackling global crime threats through innovation, intelligence sharing, and collaboration.
