Two NDC MPs whose ‘secret’ marriages have shocked Ghanaians

It is an open secret that most Ghanaian Members of Parliament (MPs) are married, with a handful in the process of settling down. Though some have chosen to make their marriage public, others have kept their private life under wraps for reasons best known to them.

Recently, however, Ghanaians were spellbound by revelations, confirmed by the actors themselves, that some well-known figures were actually married to politicians.

Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi in the Volta Region and Majority Chief Whip in Ghana’s Parliament, is one of the lawmakers whose disclosure shocked Ghanaians.

Unknown to many, Mr Dafeamekpor has been married to Ebi Bright, the current Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, for many years, and the couple has children. The marriage became public knowledge on her birthday, May 19, when Hon. Dafeamekpor took to X with the following message, which ignited public debate online, especially among those who were not previously aware that the two were a couple.

“A very Special Happy Birthday wishes to this brilliant woman, a sweet wife and a wonderful mother. From the entire family, we wish you good health & the fortitude of mind to continue to transform your beloved Tema, as Mayor. Tons of Love & a mighty hug from me & the kids. Spiritus Invictus!!!!” the message read.

Ebi Bright is also a politician, a development communicator, and a former actress who currently serves as the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema.

During the 2024 election campaign, Mr Dafeamekpor was seen shuttling between his own South Dayi constituency in the Volta Region and Tema Central in the Greater Accra Region.

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Former Majority Leader, Hon Mahama Ayariga, is also in the news for a similar secret marriage to the MP for Sunyani West, Millicent Yeboah Amankwah.

Mr Ayariga appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, for his vetting as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor had introduced Mr Ayariga’s father-in-law but did not immediately mention Mrs Ayariga, who was seated among those accompanying the nominee.

Mr Ayariga drew the Chairman’s attention to the omission.

“Mr Chairman, you have introduced the father-in-law, but you haven’t introduced the daughter,” he said.

Mr Ahiafor subsequently acknowledged the Sunyani West MP, saying: “We have the spouse, Hon Mrs Ayariga, formerly known as Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, a Member of Parliament, here in our midst.”
