“Love for Sale?” The Rise of Financial Transaction Boyfriends Among Today’s Girls

Feature Article “Love for Sale?” The Rise of Financial Transaction Boyfriends Among Today’s Girls
TUE, 14 OCT 2025

In today’s society, relationships are no longer just about love, trust, and connection. A new trend is growing quietly but rapidly especially among young women. It’s called “financial transaction relationships.”

This is the reality: many young girls now have boyfriends not because of love, but because of what the man can pay for.

Whether it’s:

  • Wigs and weaves
  • Phones and gadgets
  • Designer clothes and shoes
  • Family bills
  • School fees
  • "Anko" (matching clothes) for event
  • Business capital
  • Rent and upkeep

There is often one boyfriend for each responsibility. One for school. One for fashion. One for family needs. One for fun. And maybe one for emotional attention. It’s no longer a romantic relationship it’s a business deal.

Why Is This Happening?
There are several reasons why this trend has taken over:

  • Poverty and financial pressure some girls come from poor backgrounds and feel the only way to survive or succeed is through men with money.
  • Peer pressure and social media Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat show a lifestyle of “soft life” flashy cars, iPhones, travels, fashion and many girls want to live that life by any means.
  • Broken homes and poor parental support some girls grow up without fatherly protection or guidance, and turn to men to fill that emotional and financial gap.
  • Low self-worth when a girl believes her value is in her body, she begins to “sell” herself to get what she wants even if it means sacrificing her dignity.

The Danger of Financial Boyfriend Culture

This lifestyle may look glamorous on the outside but the consequences are serious:

  • Loss of self-respect
  • Emotional emptiness
  • Multiple heartbreaks
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Unwanted pregnancies
  • Inability to build true love or stable homes
  • Exposure to STDs, abuse, and trafficking
  • Spiritual and mental damage

Worse, some men see these girls as “investments” and once they’re done spending, they expect “returns” which can lead to violence or revenge.

Is Every Relationship Like This?
No. Not every young woman is chasing money, and not every man is using his wallet to control women. But this "boyfriend as ATM", alert me, Momo me trend is becoming normal even joked about on social media:

“If he’s not sending money, what’s the point?”

“I have five sponsors. One for hair, one for rent, one for food, one for school fees, and one for enjoyment!”

This mindset is dangerous. It teaches girls to use men, and it teaches boys to treat girls like property.

What’s the Solution?
Teach girls self-worth beyond money and appearance.

Empower them with education and skills so they don’t depend on men for everything.

Talk openly about love, boundaries, and responsibility.

Train boys to value character, not just looks.

Challenge the social media lie that money equals happiness.

Raise girls who want partners, not sponsors.
Final Thoughts
Love should never be for sale. When money becomes the reason for dating, heartbreak becomes the result.

To every young girl out there: you are more than your looks, your body, or your bills. Build yourself. Build your future. And one day, the right man will not “buy” you he will choose you, respect you, and grow with you.

To the community: let’s stop celebrating “transaction love” and start raising daughters and sons who understand the true meaning of relationship, dignity, and self-respect.
