The greed of a man who wanted to exchange ¢5 million for GH¢1,500 landed him in trouble when the money he collected turned out to be paper neatly cut in the size of the new GH¢1 notes.
The cut-out papers were covered at both ends with genuine GH¢1 notes to clear all doubts from the intended victim.
Luckily for him, the two fraudsters — Victor Anane, 28, and Isaac Mensah, 27 — have been arrested by the police.
The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Douglas Akrofi Asiedu, told the Daily Graphic that the suspects allegedly approached the victim, Mr Jerry Amenohor, at Abeka Lapaz on July 28 this year, and convinced him to part with ¢5 million in return for GH¢1,500, to which the victim obliged.
He said shortly after the deal, some men who claimed to be policemen, but were supposedly working with the fraudsters, intercepted the victim and retrieved the money given to him by the suspects to use it on another victim.
DCOP Asiedu said the victim alerted the Korle-Bu police of whom three officers — General Lance Corporal Adama Adamu and Constables Apeweh Achana and Bonaventure Awologe — feigned interest in the deal of exchanging old notes for new ones, leading to the arrest of the two suspects on August 11, 2007.
DCOP Asiedu warned the public against the practice of changing old cedi notes from unauthorised persons as the banking institutions had gone to great lengths to educate the public on the use of both the new and old currencies for a period of six months.
