The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has dismissed comments by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, concerning its investigation into some actions former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints programme on Saturday, June 21, the political science professor suggested that the Special Prosecutor, Lawyer Kissi Agyebeng, appears to be acting out of a personal vendetta.
But in a statement issued on Sunday, the OSP said its ongoing probe is based on stated allegations of corruption, not any personal motives.
“The OSP wishes to place on record that its actions involving the former Finance Minister are based on stated allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences, particularly abuse of office for profit, including the multiple-year contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML),” the statement said.
It added: “Incidentally, the said CEO [Prof. Gyampo] called and sent messages to the Office in respect of SML while officers of the OSP and National Security were still conducting a legal search of SML’s premises.”
The OSP stressed that while it welcomes criticism, public officials must refrain from interfering in its work—either directly or through unfounded public comments.
“Such actions have the potential to undermine the fight against corruption,” the Office warned.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ofori-Atta is under investigation for alleged corruption-related offences, including issues connected to the National Cathedral project and the SML deal.
The OSP has since requested an Interpol red notice for his arrest amid reports that he is receiving medical treatment in the United States.
He is said to have undergone prostate cancer surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on Friday, June 13.
