Decline in asylum applications: What's behind the falling numbers?

It was one of the most hotly debated topics in the election campaign and beyond. Asylum in Germany and the associated migration policy. The German AfD Political Party that is calling for immigration to be curbed. It has also played a major role in the coalition negotiations between the Parties CDU and SPD. It’s therefore not a surprise that the number of asylum applications is actually falling.

The ‘Pro Asyl’ association writes about this on X:

If you follow the debates, it's hard to believe, but the number of asylum applications in Germany is falling, even though more and more people around the world are having to flee war and crises.

Germany tight, drastically reduce asylum applications.

According to ‘Pro Asylum', around 122 million people worldwide were on the run at the end of 2024. This represents a new high. At the same time, the number of asylum applications in Germany has fallen by 30 per cent. In the first quarter of 2025, applications for asylum even fell by 45 per cent.

According to ‘Pro Asylum’, this is mainly due to the border controls introduced in mid-2024 by the then Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD). The sealing off of the EU's external borders has also had an impact.

Decline in asylum applications. What's behind the falling numbers?

The association writes on its website. The people who were turned back by the federal police in 2024 when attempting to enter the country without authorization, mainly came from countries from which the majority of asylum and protection seekers originate, namely Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Turkey.

In other words, people who are in all likelihood in need of protection. Despite the significant drop in the number of applications, migration and asylum policy continues to be a major issue. At the beginning of April, the German Association of Counties (DLT) called on the Political Parties, CDU/CSU and SPD to implement a general freeze on the admission of people from war and crisis zones.
