My tenure was marked by challenges, dedication to Ghana’s security – General Thomas Oppong-Peprah

General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (Rtd), the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Ghana Armed Forces, said his tenure, since February 1, 2024, as CDS, has recorded outstanding growth and dedication to the country's security and wellbeing, notwithstanding the challenges.

The Retired four-star general, dressed in full military ceremonial attire, in his end of service farewell speech on Monday, said his resilient and determination-driven tenure overcame numerous tests, including complex domestic and regional security landscapes, strengthened partnerships, and enhanced capabilities.

That, he noted, deepened the strength and unity of the Ghana Armed Forces.

“My tenure as the Chief of Defence Staff has been a journey marked by challenges. It has also been a journey marked by growth and an unwavering dedication to our nation's security and wellbeing. Throughout this period, we have faced numerous tests of our resolve and resilience and yet, we have consistently emerged stronger and more united,” General Oppong-Peprah said.

“We have navigated complex security landscapes; both domestically and regionally. We have worked tirelessly to enhance our capabilities, strengthen our partnerships and ensure the safety and security of our citizens”.

“Our performances in the recent general election were exemplary, showcasing our commitment to democracy and the rule of law.”

Filled with gratitude, he touted his accomplishments to include the appointment of the first female Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), the acquisition of the largest Navy Ship in Ghana's history, and granting of Presidential Charter to the National Defence University, urging all uniformed

personnel to support the new CDS, Brigadier General William Agyapong, to deliver on his mandate.

General Oppong-Peprah commended former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the current Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), President John Dramani Mahama, for the opportunity given him to serve the country.

He received a citation, a plaque and numerous gifts by sister security agencies and the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, for his 38 years of distinguished and meritorious service to the GAF and the country, in various capacities he served.

In keeping with military tradition, the GAF honoured him with a lavish farewell parade and pulling out ceremony – a popular military custom performed for seniormost personnel upon completion of their service.

This ceremony, held at Burma Camp in Accra, majestically ushers General Oppong-Peprah out of the Ghana Armed Forces into civilian life.
