Accra, Ghana – March 20, 2025 – Child Online Africa (COA) warns that Africa’s youth face a growing crisis of declining discipline and rising narcissism, threatening the continent’s future. The organization urges policymakers, educators, parents, and community leaders to take immediate action to curb these alarming trends.
Studies reveal a troubling rise in self-centeredness, entitlement, and disregard for societal norms, driven by unregulated digital exposure and shifting values. This decline in discipline and respect for authority has led to increased cyberbullying, academic dishonesty, and social conflicts, further eroding the moral fabric of African societies.
While the digital age presents immense opportunities, it also promotes self-glorification over community values. Without intervention, Africa risks raising a generation disconnected from empathy, accountability, and responsibility.
To address this crisis, Child Online Africa calls for a multi-stakeholder approach, emphasizing the need for:
- Stronger Parental Guidance: Parents must actively supervise their children’s online and offline behaviour, instilling values of respect, humility, and responsibility.
- Reinforced Educational Policies: Schools should integrate digital citizenship and character development programs to teach ethical technology use and discipline.
- Policy Reforms: Governments must implement and enforce child protection laws that regulate content exposure and mitigate harmful social media influences.
- Community Engagement: Religious and traditional leaders should play a more active role in mentoring youth and reinforcing moral and ethical values.
COA demands immediate collaboration among governments, institutions, and civil society to implement awareness campaigns and policy reforms that promote responsible digital use and character development.
"Discipline and accountability must be at the heart of our efforts to secure a better future for Africa’s youth," COA stated. "We must act now—before it is too late."
