The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region, has organised a quiz competition on the 1992 Republican Constitution for some selected basic schools in the Municipality.
The essence of the event was aimed at increasing the knowledge and understanding of school pupils and students on the 1992 constitution as well as instilling in them the sense of patriotism and nationalism as the grow.
The occasion which formed part of the activities to commemorate the 68th Independence Day, attracted stakeholders in Education, the Municipal Assembly, Media and NCCE staff sponsored by the Commission.
Speaking at the closing ceremony on Monday, the Kassena -Nankana Municipal Director of NCCE, Madam Ajongbah Felicia, explained that the main objective of the programme was not only to increase the knowledge and understanding of school pupils and students on the 1992 constitution but to also increase their interest in civic education activities.
She added that among the Commission’s function is to formulate, implement and oversee programme intended to inculcate in the citizens of Ghana awareness of their civic responsibilities and in appreciation of their rights and obligation as people.
"The constitution creates the room for civic education to be used as important strategy and tool for creating awareness of the main values of democratic governance, instilling the spirit of patriotism and enhancing citizen participation in governance,” she stressed.
She told the stakeholders that the Commission’s Theme for the 2025 operational year is “Ghana’s Future: Our Collective Responsibility”, and stated that the theme reminds all Ghanaians of their collective duty to work together in peace and harmony.
One school pupil taken his award after the competition on the 1992 Constitution
The Regional Director of NCCE, Mr Ayaala James, stated that the competition which is organised nationally, targeting students and pupils is focused on instilling in them the values of civic responsibility, a sense of patriotism and nationalism.
Mr Pius Akambe, a representative of the Assembly, lauded the Commission for such an educative programme and urged the Commission to continue and expand the programme to cover more schools in the area.
The competition was among four basic schools in the Municipality, which include Namolo Junior High School(JHS), Presbyterian JHS, Standard Preparatory JHS and Basina JHS.
Basina JHS emerged first with 36 points followed by Standard Preparatory JHS with 35 points, Presbyterian JHS third with 30 points and Namolo JHS with fourth position with 28 points.
The Commission awarded the competing Schools with Certificates, notebooks, story books, Mathematical sets, pens and copies of the 1992 constitution.
