Boakye Fosuhene, Asutifi District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has cautioned the public to be wary of persons who approach them under the pretext of changing their monies for the new currencies.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at the close of a public education programme on the redenomination exercise at Kenyase Number Two, the District Director urged Ghanaians to transact business only with the financial institutions.
The Bank of Ghana had explained that the redenomination exercise, which takes off next Tuesday had become necessary because the current note regime places a significant burden on the national economy.
According to the Central Bank the change will make it simpler to cash, carry and count any amount of money.
Mr. Fosuhene said the NCCE's educational programme which lasted for three months spanned all the 10 zones within the District comprising 28 communities.
The Commission collaborated with the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service to cover all the 46 basic schools, as well as three of the four senior secondary schools in the area.
The NCCE Director mentioned Gyamfi Kumanin Secondary Technical at Wamahinso, Our Lady of Apostles Girls Secondary School at Kenyasi Number Two and Hwidiem Model Secondary School as the beneficiary institutions.
Mr. Fosuhene pointed out that even though enough public education had been given on the redenomination exercise, Ghanaians ought to be extra vigilant of the security features of the new currency.
Elijah Osei-Kwame, Assistant District field officer of NCCE, reminded Ghanaians that after the six-month transition period of the introduction of the new currency, the old cedi would cease to be legal tender.
He urged the public to exchange the old notes and coins for the new currencies at the banks.
