The Catholic Diocese of Obuasi has lined up a series of activities to commemorate 30 years since attaining diocesan status.
The church, which was elevated to a diocese in March 1995, has formed a committee to oversee the year-long celebration, set to conclude in December.
Speaking to the media after unveiling the 30th-anniversary plaque, Rev. Father Francis Darko, the Cathedral Administrator, highlighted the church’s long history. He noted that while the Catholic Church had been present in the area for over a century, it was in 1995 that it was officially expanded into a diocese.
Reflecting on the church’s achievements over the years, he emphasized its role in fostering community development and preaching salvation. He explained that the church has undertaken several social interventions, including the establishment of Saint Thomas School, financial assistance for the needy and students, and the creation of a social center that hosts various events. He also highlighted the impact of the Saint Thomas Cooperative Credit Union, which provides financial support to small and medium enterprises. Additionally, he noted the success of the One Parish, One Student initiative at the Catholic University, which has helped many students complete their education.
Acknowledging the contributions of those who have served the church over the years, he called on members to continue supporting its mission, stating that it is through their efforts that the church has come this far. He also announced plans to establish Saint Thomas Media to broadcast church services and activities worldwide, expressing confidence that this would help reach more souls for Christ and urging members to support the initiative.
Genevive Opoku Mensah, Chairperson of the Anniversary Committee, outlined the series of activities planned for the celebration and urged members to actively participate and support the initiative. She explained that the theme for the anniversary, "Pilgrims of Hope: A Yearning for the Treasures of Heaven," was chosen to encourage reflection on the church’s journey, celebrate its milestones, and look forward to the future with renewed hope and purpose.
As part of the celebrations, the church intends to organize faith-based radio programs, youth and Valentine’s Day activities, outreach programs for inactive members, and special Lenten retreats. There will also be Easter Monday games, financial literacy and entrepreneurship seminars, leadership and marriage seminars, and anniversary lectures that will focus on the history of the diocese. Other activities will include a worship and praise concert, a mini-clinic, a health walk, a candlelight procession, a debate and quiz competition, a pilgrimage to Rome and Accra, a thanksgiving service, and a grand climax celebration. The events will also feature an awards ceremony, a homecoming dinner, and fundraising activities.
The Church President, Hon. John Alexander Ackon, paid tribute to the church’s forebears, recognizing their sacrifices and dedication to the work of God. He emphasized that their efforts laid a strong foundation for the diocese, enabling it to thrive over the years. With a rich legacy of service and growth, the Obuasi Catholic Diocese looks forward to an impactful 30th-anniversary celebration, reinforcing its commitment to faith, development, and community transformation.
