The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for its overall management of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, describing the arrangements as “generally adequate and credible.”
This assessment was shared during a post-election press briefing in Accra on Sunday, December 8, by CODEO Advisory Board Co-chair Rev. Dr. Fred Degbe.
According to CODEO’s preliminary statement, the electoral process, from the setup of polling stations to the counting of ballots, adhered largely to Ghana’s electoral laws and procedures.
“From the foregoing, CODEO confidently confirms that the EC’s arrangements, from set-up to counting ballots at polling stations, were generally adequate and credible,” Rev. Dr. Degbe stated.
The coalition highlighted that its 4,000 trained observers, stationed across all 276 constituencies, reported that essential election materials were available, polling stations were appropriately set up, and security personnel were present at most locations.
Observers also confirmed that ballot boxes were empty and sealed in plain view before voting began.
While acknowledging the overall credibility of the process, CODEO noted isolated incidents of delays and challenges, including late arrivals of polling officials at some stations.
Despite these setbacks, the coalition affirmed that the integrity of the electoral process was not compromised.
CODEO lauded all stakeholders, including the EC, the Election Security Task Force, political parties, and voters, for contributing to the peaceful conduct of the polls.
The coalition pledged to release its Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) estimates after the EC officially announces the election results.
