#Election2024: CODEO projects 63.9% turnout, lowest in last three elections

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has projected a 63.9% voter turnout for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, marking the lowest turnout in the last three election cycles.

This figure, revealed during a post-election press briefing in Accra on Sunday, December 8, reflects a significant drop compared to previous elections.

In 2016, voter turnout stood at 69.6%, while 2020 recorded a higher rate of 79%, according to CODEO’s historical data.

Addressing the media, CODEO Advisory Board Co-chair Rev. Dr. Fred Degbe noted that the turnout projection is based on the coalition’s Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) methodology.

He emphasized the coalition’s confidence in the credibility of its estimates, which were derived from a nationally representative sample of polling stations.

“Our PVT provisional estimates project voter turnout at 63.9% ±0.5%,” Rev. Dr. Degbe stated.

He added that the projection underscores changing voter behavior, which could stem from various factors including voter apathy or challenges encountered during the electoral process.

CODEO, known for its robust election observation efforts, deployed 4,000 trained and accredited observers nationwide to monitor the December 7 polls.

Their findings aim to provide independent, non-partisan insights into the conduct of Ghana’s elections.

Meanwhile, the official voter turnout rate will be confirmed by the Electoral Commission (EC) as part of the final election results.
