SUN, 08 DEC 2024

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North Constituency, Dr. Kwamena Minta Nyarku, popularly known as Ragga, has been re-elected in the 2024 elections, securing a clear victory over his closest rival, Mr. Horace Ekow Ewusi of the NPP.

Ragga garnered 23,521 votes, representing 57.6% of the total valid votes cast, while Mr. Ewusi of the NPP received 17,045 votes, accounting for 41.7% of the total 40,858 valid votes cast, with a voter turnout of 58%.

When comparing the 2024 Cape Coast North election results to those of 2020, Dr. Nyarku's performance shows a significant improvement. In 2020, Ragga won 22,972 votes, or 51.48%, while Barbara Asher Ayisi of the NPP secured 21,643 votes, or 48.51%. In 2024, Dr. Nyarku increased his vote count by 6,476 votes, demonstrating the strong support he has built over the past four years.

The 2024 election was marked by a contentious campaign, with the constituency sharply divided between the NPP and NDC. At one point, billboards from both parties were destroyed by unknown individuals, leading to bitter accusations and blame games that remain unresolved by the police.

Many political analysts had predicted that Mr. Ewusi of the NPP would wrest the seat from Dr. Nyarku, especially given the wave of development projects taking place across the constituency. However, these factors did not sway the election in favor of the NPP.

Ragga expressed his gratitude to party executives, supporters, and everyone who contributed to his campaign. "It’s been hard work and the implementation of a well-laid-out strategy," he said. He acknowledged that the journey had not been easy but pledged to continue working hard to improve the lives of his constituents.

He urged his supporters to celebrate with caution, emphasizing the need for peace and harmony in the constituency. "We’ve won, and it’s important for us to be magnanimous in our jubilation. We are one people, and we must continue to live in peace to develop our constituency."

Dr. Nyarku also shared a message on his Facebook page: "Whether you voted for me or not, I am and will be a Member of Parliament for all. Obiara ka ho! Thank you, Cape Coast North, for the opportunity to serve you once again. To our great party, the NDC—nationally, regionally, at the constituency, and branch levels—I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support. I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to my campaign teams, social media campaigners, executives, students, lecturers, and everyone who contributed to this victory. Jah bless us all."

He concluded by saying, "Congratulations to all of us... still... Who Jah bless, no one curse!"
