"A vote for Bawumia is a vote for Christian" — United Zongo for Bawumia Chair

The Chairman of United Zongo for Bawumia, Abdul Aziz, also known as Chairman Soja, has strongly criticized calls for Christians to vote exclusively for a presidential candidate of their faith.

He described the argument that Ghana, being a predominantly Christian country, requires a Christian president as irrelevant and divisive.

Addressing the media during a press briefing, Chairman Abdul Aziz emphasized the importance of maintaining the peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians in Ghana. He stated that politics should not undermine the harmonious relationship between the two religious communities, remarking, "Muslims and Christians are brothers."

To support his position, Chairman Abdul Aziz drew on a historical account from Islamic tradition. He recounted how a group of Muslims facing severe persecution in Makkah was instructed by Prophet Mohammed to seek refuge under the protection of a Christian king in Abyssinia.

He explained that despite repeated demands from the persecutors to expel the Muslim refugees back to Makkah, the Christian king, Negus, refused to hand them over. "The persecutors called on King Negus of Abyssinia to expel the Muslims, but he declined to act against them on his land," Chairman Abdul Aziz recounted.

Drawing from this example, he underscored the unity between Muslims and Christians, affirming, "Christians and Muslims are one. A vote for Bawumia is a vote for a Christian."

Chairman Abdul Aziz called on Christians in Ghana to follow the example of King Negus, who provided protection to Muslims in a Christian nation. He urged them to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's presidential candidacy by voting for him in the 2024 general elections, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and collaboration across religious lines.
