Ghanaian media personality Afia Pokuaa, popularly known as Vim Lady, has expressed concerns about President Nana Akufo-Addo unveiling of a statue of himself.
The broadcaster asserted that this act may negatively affect the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming December 2024 elections.
In a post shared on her Facebook page on Friday, November 8, Vim Lady criticized Akufo-Addo’s timing for the statue installation, calling it a “sin against the people.”
She noted the political risk of such a display so close to the election, given the current sentiment among the Ghanaian electorate, who she said are “running on short fuse” under Akufo-Addo’s administration.
“Oh Nana Addo. 5 weeks to elections, Oh No!” Vim Lady wrote. “When voters are running on short fuse, under your 2nd term, an act like this is a sin against the people and court Needless Negative Publicity against your Legacy and Candidate.”
A controversial monument
The bronze statue of Akufo-Addo, which depicts him in a suit and glasses with a smile, is displayed outside Sekondi’s Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region.
Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah said the monument is intended to celebrate Akufo-Addo’s contributions to the region’s development.
However, the statue has ignited controversy online, with critics accusing the outgoing president of “self-glorification” amid pressing national issues.
“The people of the Western Region deserve better than these self-serving displays,” opposition NDC MP for Ellembele Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
