The Minority in Parliament has kicked against the leasing of the Komenda Sugar Factory to a private investor.

As widely reported, the Ministry of Trade and Industry has reached a lease agreement with West African Agro Limited, an India-based firm, for a renewable term of 15 to 20 years.

Speaking to Citi News on Friday evening, Deputy Minority Whip Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim said the Minority is not in support of the agreement.

He said the Minority in Parliament will take steps to stop the agreement, describing it as bogus.

“I don’t think this is the best way to go. Why has Akufo-Addo’s government waited for seven to eight years and now he has a new plan for the Komenda Factory? When Mahama comes we plan to produce sugar. We do not mean to convert brown sugar into white sugar. We meant to create employment and produce sugar in Ghana so that it would cut down on the importation of sugar.

“We will do everything in our power to stop this bogus agreement, this bogus transfer of a national asset to a private investor,” Ahmed Ibrahim said.

Speaking on the same platform, Trade Minister KT Hammond said it appears the Minority does not understand why the Komenda Factory needs to be leased.

He said leasing the company to the private investor is the smart play as it will give the country over $1 million in rent.
