The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has emphasised the critical need for journalists to verify and cross-check information before disseminating it.

Speaking at a summit organised by Ghana Report in Accra on Thursday, August 1, 2024, the IGP cautioned against the eagerness to break news without proper verification from reliable sources.

"Let us check breaking news journalism. Putting information out without first verifying and cross-checking with all relevant sources can hurt our society, so my colleagues in the media must be careful," Dr. Dampare emphasised in his keynote address.

He mentioned that disinformation and misinformation pose threats to national security and societal cohesion, urging a concerted effort to combat these challenges effectively.

"Disinformation and misinformation are national security threats, and we should view them from that perspective. We must collectively address these challenges to safeguard the security of our nation," he stressed.

Dr. Dampare further expressed concern over the public's reaction to law enforcement against offences stemming from false information, urging a reflection on societal values.

"What do we want as a people? We must decide if we stand for what is right or wrong. Everyone needs to contribute to the solution in combating disinformation and misinformation," he urged.

Highlighting the need for a shift in mindset towards more humane behaviours, the IGP called for a collective effort to stop finding pleasure in others' misfortunes.

"The time has come for a mindset change. We have become desensitised to each other's pain, finding joy in others' suffering.

“We must strive to change this mindset," Dr. Dampare concluded.
