Daniel Yao Domelevo, Ghana's former Auditor General, has urged the government to take immediate action against corrupt officials in the country.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show on Friday, July 19, Mr. Domelevo said evidence of corruption is everywhere but the government has failed to properly investigate and prosecute corrupt actors.
"Look, everywhere you will see corruption. You don’t need to look far. Look at the lifestyle of people in government. Some have worked for government and toiled all their years, but even getting a square meal a day is a challenge for them," Mr. Domelevo stated.
He cited examples such as the alleged $2 million paid to a South African company for a sky train project that never materialized, as well as claims that Ghana dug the most expensive hole in history—the National Cathedral foundation pit.
"All that you hear is that Ghana has dug the most expensive hole in human history. So the evidence is there. This is not rhetoric. This is not perception," Mr. Domelevo said.
The former Auditor General believes the level of corruption in government has grown severely over the years under successive administrations.
"They know that the level to which they have taken the corruption is alarming. In fact, successive governments seem to be running a marathon or race in corruption, and what is here is that almost every government takes it to the higher level, but the level to which it is now is terrible," he remarked.
Mr. Domelevo warned that the corruption issue must be urgently addressed and corrupt officials prosecuted, instead of just talking about evidence of graft.
"It is not sustainable, and I think something must be done quickly. It doesn’t matter the number of days or months left. Something must be done now. The corrupt officials must be called out by the government and taken on, that is, prosecuted. Instead of just looking on and always telling us where the evidence is," stressed the former AG.
