In a bid to equip Ghanaian youth with essential skills for employability, improved livelihoods, and wealth creation, Mr. Anthony Kwasi Frempong, the Vice Principal of Mampong Technical College of Education, is spearheading a transformative vision that emphasizes the crucial role of technical education in adapting to evolving economic, cultural, and technological landscapes.
Mr. Frempong stressed the necessity for the youth to cultivate knowledge, attitudes, and skills to adapt to the changing world, emphasizing the pivotal role of a well-trained and motivated workforce in expediting socio-economic development. He positioned technical education as a key contributor to a nation’s growth, citing its impact on addressing unemployment and fostering entrepreneurship.
The Vice Principal, a staunch advocate for youth education, highlighted a concerning gap in access to quality early childhood education despite increasing school enrollment in Ghana. He identified challenges such as the absence of a context-specific definition of quality, public prejudice, inadequate parental involvement, insufficient teaching staff, and institutional barriers. Lack of awareness about the relevance of early childhood education, according to him, perpetuates these challenges.
Discussing the impact of vocational and technical education, Mr. Frempong cited the inclusion of technical skills such as carpentry, welding, and computer programming, coupled with essential soft skills like communication and problem-solving. He asserted that a comprehensive education system blending academic knowledge and practical skills prepares students for the job market and promotes self-employment.
Addressing the integration of technology at Mampong Technical College of Education, Mr. Frempong highlighted the use of messaging apps such as Edmodo and Google Classroom. These tools facilitate resource curation, assignment posting, event announcements, and maintain accessibility for student inquiries. He underscored the role of technology in connecting with families as an alternative to traditional communication methods.
Speaking about his vision as Vice Principal, Mr. Frempong expressed the college’s aspiration to become an outstanding technical institution on a global scale. He emphasized the importance of embracing innovative theories, techniques, and technologies to ensure success in a rapidly changing world.
Mr. Frempong’s journey from the Head of the Department of Education and Professional Studies to the Vice Principal reflects his motivation to shape the lives of young people and inspire them to reach their full potential. With his commitment to innovation and quality education, he envisions a future where Mampong Technical College of Education stands among the top-tier tertiary institutions worldwide.
