The Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has cut the sod for the commencement of work on Sogakope-Adidome-Ho-Fume road in the Volta Region.
The project involves reconstruction of a two lane single carriageway bituminous surfaced road from Sogakope to Adidome, a distance of 30 kilometres for the first phase and the first 25 kilometres of the 45 kilometres Ho-Fume road.
The government of Ghana is funding the project, which is estimated at ¢187.34 billion and expected to be completed by June 2008. Messrs Rolider Engineering Company is executing the job.
Addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people of the South and North Tongu districts and others from the project area, Alhaji Mahama announced plans to reconstruct more than 10 major roads in the country besides those which are ongoing this year.
He said the government was working relentlessly to source enough funds to rehabilitate other road projects in the region.
The Vice-President pointed out that such projects entailed massive financial resources and that the investment could only be meaningful if the roads were safeguarded through proper maintenance and responsible use.
The Vice-President charged the Highway Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service to intensify its work in order to bring the rising cases of overloading of vehicles under control.
The Deputy Minister of Transportation, Mr Magnus Opare-Asamoah, said the completion of the road would facilitate easy administration of the region because the road linked the Keta, South Tongu and Adaklu-Anyigbe districts to the regional capital, Ho.
He said economic activities such as agricultural products and their marketing, as well trading in the region, would be boosted to generate more employment.
The Volta Regional Minister, Mr Kofi Dzamesi, said the Sogakope-Adidome-Ho-Fume road had been on the drawing board since 1992 and that its reconstruction by the government was a manifestation of the fact that it did not discriminate in the execution of development projects.
He said six districts in the Volta Region Ketu, Keta, Akatsi, South Tongu, Kpando and Hohoe - were selected for the implementation of the Millennium Challenge Account projects.
