"My Name is Cephas Tamakloe, I am the Compound Overseer, understand me"?

This was the signature introduction of Cephas Tamakloe, it was meant to subdue vernacular speakers so that they are forced to pay their vernacular fines when caught speaking anything local.

To get a Sakumon Primary School kid to speak English, a cost implication must be attached.

We were the 'hopeless ones', a school reserved for kids of the poor and those who didn't place much value on quality education.

The school had some of the most recalcitrant kids you'd find anywhere. Imagine a primary school kid who goes fishing, sometimes skipping school along the way.

Cephas Tamakloe was given the Compound Overseer because he was the older and seemingly stronger guy. That was the only position with little emphasis on academic prowess and he took it with pride and managed it with all diligence.

To do this, he needed a secretary, I was his secretary because Cephas could not take records of names. My job was simple, when Cephas concludes that you have spoken vernacular, your name has to go into the record books. Once this is done, no matter what, you are going to pay the spot fine.

It was a beginning with little promise, one with predictable outcome of failure than one of success.

Two decades after leaving Sakumono due to the death of my father, I decided to look up the names of my friends back then. I was praying that life turns out well for these guys because I knew the foundation didn't have much promise.

The few I saw in person dropped out of school to do all kinds of odd jobs and were struggling at the bottom of the wealth chain. Without education, opportunities are limited, and the few that exist are also predominantly inaccessible.

God has a way of placing people, raising giants from lilliputs and making them a shining example of what can achieve in a man who leave it all and allows him to have His way.

3 years ago, I chanced on a profile, Cephas Kpegah Tamakloe, almost 22 years after leaving Sakumono. It took me seconds to recognise him. Yes, the name did help but then I have seen a couple of people from the same class with different names on Social and didn't struggle to recognise them. This wasn't an exception to the rule, therefore.

I got in touch with him and I was amazed at how God had turned around the life of someone we classified as blockheaded back in the day.

We linked up, and then I paid him a visit at his Church, Breaking Yoke Ministry. His deep insight into the Word of God was the highest point for me. It was a great departure from the person I knew since infancy. Not just in the knowledge of scripture, but his practical appreciation of life in its intricacies was amazing. This was a man who has seen it all, from abject poverty to a place of influence

His encounter with God and call to ministry was a transformational experience, a complete surgical refix of his brain. Indeed, when God calls, he equips.

Today, Cephas Kpegah Tamakloe celebrates his birthday and I stand as a proud friend who knows his story and can attest to the bumps he's had to overcome to make it this far.

It’s a story of encouragement to all who have lost hope in life and have believed the lie that there is no hope for them.

Prophet Kpegah has a beautiful story that refutes this, one that says nothing is impossible for God and one that makes the charcoal seller's son wear white unstained

It only takes God to do this and it's beautiful when he does it. His ways are indeed perfect.

As we celebrate the life of this great man, made by the very have of God, we all have to believe that we matter to the Creator of all things.

This is from a proud friend and a brother, a witness to the transformation, to my brother Prophet Kpegah and to all on the verge of giving up; there a God who picks a man and transforms him.
